We at Partizan Brewing are delighted to invite you to join us at The Rake in Borough Market, Thursday, December 1st along with our good friends and Bristol's newly crowned best brewery, Wiper & True to celebrate the launch of a collaborative seasonal release, the XK. This is a beer of which we are very proud and are most excited to share with you.
As some of you may know, here at Partizan, we have a great interest in the history of beer making and the development and evolution of style over time. In production, we enjoy exploring this with our series of X ales, brewed as loose interpretations of traditional recipes. Mild ale, originally designated by the letter X(xxx) was a term used to denote young beer; that which was consumed fresh rather than undergoing any ageing process. Traditionally, some of this beer would have been used to blend with old or stale beer with a view to giving a more pleasant resultant flavor.
The letter K, in beer taxonomy of the time referred to strong beer that was intended to be kept for periods of up to 12 months - this included March beer, October beer, stock ales and the like. Often this beer was aged in wooden barrels where the letter K would indicate that it should remain untouched for some time.
The genesis of this collaboration came when the occasion arose to share a stand at this year's London Craft Beer Festival with the folks from Bristol's Wiper & True. It was a great opportunity for us to meet the people behind the great beers we know they produce. After some discussion, we discovered that W&T had been aging a strong beer that would fit the keeping beer bill perfectly. Definitely not a traditional recipe with a very modern, unusual addition and very complex malt bill, it was a beer we all very quickly warmed to and knew would make a great beer for blending with our X.
At the festival, we debuted the launch of the XK blend (usually to a ratio of approximately 2:1, but also to personal taste) pouring straight from the taps in a very free flowing (excuse the pun) organic manner. We all enjoyed the beer in the glass so much (which was also a big hit with festival goers) that we decided to go about cementing the relationship and packaging the XK for fans to enjoy throughout the winter season.
The current edition of Partizan X Ale used in he XK blend is also on sale separately and available on draught and in bottle. It is based on an 1860s Lovibonds recipe comprising an entirely pale malt grain bill with a relatively high FG resulting in a pleasant residual sweetness in a beer of just over 5% alcohol. Wiper and True’s Keeper Beer is a Barley Wine aged for 14 months over Bourbon-soaked oak chips. Deep, rich and complex with smooth whiskey tones, vanilla and soft notes of berries.
The XK will be available in exclusive special release 750ml sharing bottles as well as in limited quantity on draught while stocks last. It presents as a rich and satisfying beer with spicy fruitcake notes, nutmeg, orange peel and a comforting biscuity malt character that is delightfully easy to drink. Perfect for the festive season and beyond!
We hope you can all join us for the launch event at The Rake where you will have a chance to sample not only the blend but also some other beers from Partizan and Wiper & True. The brewers will be there to answer questions and to hang out and chat over a glass or two. And look out for the XK in pubs and bottle shops across the city and nationwide in December! What better way to start the advent period :)
